Artist-in-Classroom Resident

Starting in January 2021 Rebekah began teaching through the Artist-in-Classrooms program at Angel’s Gate Cultural Center. Through this program Rebekah works with elementary students from the Los Angeles and Long Beach Unified School Districts. Many of her lessons and projects revolve around local Los Angeles art works and artists. Rebekah draws from her favorite art practices and shares them with the 1st-4th grade students she interacts with throughout the school year!

Interactive Art Workshops

For the past 10 years Rebekah has facilitated numerous workshops based in the visual arts. One of her greatest joys is helping others find a way to get their hands messy, try something new, and put their boundless creativity to action. The following are some of Rebekah’s original workshops. If you are interested in booking a workshop for your class, organization, social gathering please click the button below. Rebekah loves working with her clients to find the perfect fit for each individual group.

*I have listed the youngest age that each workshop would be suitable for in relation to the skills required. All of the workshops can be easily modified to fit the thematic needs for any age group. From Pre-K gatherings to parties for the 21+ crowd, there is room for enjoyment for all.

Workshop Highlights

Skill: Collage | Theme: Iconography | Suitable for ages 5+

In this workshop participants will sift through books, magazines, artwork, photographs and other documents to find pieces to utilize in collage. The symbolism created by the juxtaposition of two seemingly disparate images or text communicates a message from each artist.

Skill: Bookbinding | Theme: Arts + Crafts Movement | Suitable for ages 8+

The historical significance of bookbinding is emphasized in this workshop. Participants will be walked through a couple different ways to go about assembling a collection of pages together. These books are excellent for journals, sketching, or collecting various pages.

Skill: Printmaking | Theme: Protest Posters | Suitable for ages 10+

Participants will choose a simple graphic to sketch and carve into a piece of wood or linoleum. This relief is then inked and printed either by hand or by press. A longtime favorite of workshop attendees the printmaking process lends itself excellently to creating a strong design with a clear message.

Other Sample Workshops

Skill: Potato Prints | Theme: William Rice | Suitable for ages 2+

Using small handheld items participants will create designs in the halves of potatoes and then use them as stamps to create a pattern on tea towels and/or paper.

Skill: Celebration Design | Theme: Sister Corita Kent | Suitable for ages 4+

Taking inspiration from the work of Los Angeles based pop artist Sister Corita Kent, participants develop handmade banners, flower crowns, and decorative items for a celebration of their choice.

Skill: Self Portraits | Theme: Frida Kahlo | Suitable for ages 4+

Any number of materials can be used to create a self portrait. Mirrors, and inspiration for the work of Frida Kahlo will be our guide as we discover how to create images of ourselves.

Skill: Contour Line Drawing | Theme: “The Stranger” | Suitable for ages 6+

Just as we use our minds to recreate memories so we will use our eyes to recreate reality. Participants will be asked to draw items and people without looking at their papers as they do so. Contour line drawings are a fun and interactive process in perception.

Skill: Charcoal + Pastels | Theme: Impressionism | Suitable for ages 7+

The impressionist movement focused on the effect of a given moment in time without concerning themselves with the details. In this workshop participants will use pastels and charcoal to create their own impression of a moment in time.

Skill: Coloring Page Design | Theme: Gustave Baumann | Suitable for ages 9+

The thick bold line work represented in the prints of Gustave Baumann serve as the jumping off point for participants to design their own coloring pages. Focusing on outlines we will create negative space to fill with color.

Skill: Found Object Sculpture | Theme: Betye Saar | Suitable for ages 12+

The world is full of magical items that can be repurposed into an assemblage that communicates a new meaning from discarded pieces. Betye Saar’s work will guide us as we learn about the ways we can reinterpret the world around us.

Skill: Embroidery | Theme: Judy Chicago’s Birth Project | Suitable for ages 12+

Judy Chicago’s extensive birth project incorporated the work of many textile workers to create multiple pieces. In this workshop participants will all work to stitch individual pieces based on a shared theme decided by the group in a recreation of a domestic working space.
